COURT of Appeals Presiding
Justice Ruben Reyes is certain to clinch the lone vacant seat in the
Supreme Court, a reliable source told The Manila Times on Wednesday.
Reyes will occupy the seat
vacated by Justice Romeo Callejo who retired in April.
Chief Justice Reynato Puno said
the Supreme Court justices had received reports that Reyes got the
appointment, but was waiting for official word from Malacañang.
The appointment is to be
announced anytime Thursday, the source said.
The closest rival of Reyes to the
post is fellow CA member Edgardo Cruz. The two magistrates are due
to retire in 2009.
In voting for the new Supreme
Court justice, the Judicial and Bar Council gave Reyes six votes and
Cruz, 5.
Reyes was born on January 3,
1939, in Hagonoy, Bulacan. He was assistant city fiscal of Manila
for nine years and regional trial court judge in Bataan and Manila
for 10 years.
A former president of the Manila
RTC Judges Association he joined the CA in March 1994 served that
Court for almost 12 years.
Reyes became the Court’s 20th
presiding justice on December 22, 2005, after the retirement of
Romeo Brawner.
He was a former professor of law
and a bar reviewer. He is married to Eladia Cruz-Reyes and they have
four children.
