HOST Lyceum of the Philippines takes on Centro
Escolar University at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the start of the 38th
Women’s National Collegiate Athletic Association basketball
tournament at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium.
Other matches feature Miriam
College against St. Scholastica’s College at 3 p.m. and Philippine
Women’s University against San Beda College-Alabang at 4:30 p.m.
A grand production number
inspired by the movie “Pirates of the Carribean” and directed by
Ramon “Chinggoy” Alonso of the Lyceum Theater Company highlights
the opening ceremony set at 12 noon.
“Lyceum is proud to host the
38th season and we’ll make sure our players will continue making
waves even after the opening rites,” said athletics director Tanny
Gonzales.
Eighteen schools are competing in
this year’s edition carrying the theme “Women Conquering the
Challenges of Sports.”
The other participating schools
are Angelicum College, Chiang Kai Shek College, College of St.
Benilde, De La Salle Zobel, Emilio Aguinaldo College, La Consolacion
College, La Salle College Antipolo, Rizal Technological University,
St. Stephen’s High School, University of Asia and the Pacific, St.
Francis of Assisi College and World Citi Colleges.
Competitions in volleyball will
start tomorrow at the RTU gym in Mandaluyong City while the
Sundays-only futsal event will begin on August 12 at the Miriam
College gym.
The junior cheerleading
competition will be in November while other events—badminton,
athletics, swimming, table tennis, lawn tennis and tae kwon
do—will be played in January.
Dodgeball may also be included in
the league’s schedule while senior cheerleading will coincide with
the closing ceremonies in March.
