Lyceum plays CEU in WNCAA opener

HOST Lyceum of the Philippines takes on Centro Escolar University at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the start of the 38th Women’s National Collegiate Athletic Association basketball tournament at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium.

Other matches feature Miriam College against St. Scholastica’s College at 3 p.m. and Philippine Women’s University against San Beda College-Alabang at 4:30 p.m.

A grand production number inspired by the movie “Pirates of the Carribean” and directed by Ramon “Chinggoy” Alonso of the Lyceum Theater Company highlights the opening ceremony set at 12 noon.

“Lyceum is proud to host the 38th season and we’ll make sure our players will continue making waves even after the opening rites,” said athletics director Tanny Gonzales.

Eighteen schools are competing in this year’s edition carrying the theme “Women Conquering the Challenges of Sports.”

The other participating schools are Angelicum College, Chiang Kai Shek College, College of St. Benilde, De La Salle Zobel, Emilio Aguinaldo College, La Consolacion College, La Salle College Antipolo, Rizal Technological University, St. Stephen’s High School, University of Asia and the Pacific, St. Francis of Assisi College and World Citi Colleges.

Competitions in volleyball will start tomorrow at the RTU gym in Mandaluyong City while the Sundays-only futsal event will begin on August 12 at the Miriam College gym.

The junior cheerleading competition will be in November while other events—badminton, athletics, swimming, table tennis, lawn tennis and tae kwon do—will be played in January.

Dodgeball may also be included in the league’s schedule while senior cheerleading will coincide with the closing ceremonies in March.
