Bus in Koronadal bombed; one killed

A powerful bomb tore through a bus at a depot in Koronadal City on Friday, leaving one person dead and at least five injured, police said.

The explosion ripped through the vehicle as it pulled into the terminal, said provincial police commander Supt. Robert Kuinisala. A second bus at the terminal also caught fire.

He said it was connected to a spate of bus bombings linked to an extortion plot. The company had received letters demanding monthly payments.

There have been previous attacks against the company, including one last month which left three people seriously injured.

Former Islamic militants and guerrillas are known to work as criminals in large parts of the island of Mindanao, demanding money from bus operators and other businesses in exchange for protection from bomb and other attacks.
