The
image of Nuestra
Señora del Buen Suceso
|
Veneration of the image began in 1625 when
then-Archbishop of Manila, Most Rev. Alonzo de Mentrida, OSA,
ordered Fr. Juan de Guevarra, OSA, to enthrone the image in the
church’s main altar after conducting an investigation into the
reported mysterious occurrences related to the image. The date was
August 10, 1625. It was also on the same occasion that the image was
given the name Nuestra Señora del Buen Suceso after that title was
drawn for six consecutive times. On September 8, 2000, the Buen
Suceso was canonically crowned.
The fiesta of the Virgin of Buen Suceso was
formerly celebrated on November 29, the day before the feast of
Saint Andrew, the titular of the parish. With the elevation of Saint
Andrew’s Church into a Cathedral, Rev. Msgr. Manny Gabriel deemed
it proper to transfer the Virgin’s feast to August 10 not only to
commemorate her enthronement in church but to have distinct
celebrations for both the Buen Suceso and Saint Andrew.
Today, Masses will be at 6 a.m., 8 a.m., 10
a.m., 12 p.m. and 2 p.m. The solemn high Mass will be officiated by
Most Rev. Jesse Mercado, bishop of Parañaque at 6 p.m. There will
also be a Rosario Cantado at 4:30 p.m. The celebration will be
capped by a grand procession starting at 7 p.m.
For inquiries, contact Msgr.
Manuel Gabriel, Parish Priest of the Cathedral Parish of Saint
Andrew, La Huerta, Parañaque City, at 826-1760.
