Gerry Chua: Baker, entrepreneur, firefighter

Promoting volunteerism 
in business and personal life

When people talk about hopia, they usually mean Eng Bee Tin. From its humble beginnings as a small bakery, Eng Bee Tin has grown to become synonymous with hopia. The man responsible for this transformation is third-generation businessman and volunteer firefighter Gerry Chua.

Eng Bee Tin was started by Gerry’s grandfather, who made it famous until the business fell on hard times. It was this ailing business that Gerry inherited 24 years ago. Chua recounted that business had gone so bad, he would be lucky to sell a few pieces per day. But through hard work, creativity and determination, Chua was able to turn things around and revive the family business.
