RP boxers dominate World Cup

FIVE Filipino boxers hurdled their respective opponents to rule the World Cup Saturday at the Arco Arena in Sacramento, California.

Former WBC super flyweight champion Gerry Peñalosa capped the Philippines’ successful campaign after dethroning WBO bantamweight champion Jhonny Gonzalez by knockout in the seventh round.

Z Gorres, AJ Banal, Michael and Diosdado Gabi had earlier prevailed to give the Philippines a 4-0 lead.

Z Gorres knocked out former junior flyweight champion Eric Ortiz in the eighth round to claim the IBF Junior Bantamweight Intercontinental Title.

The referee stopped the fight with 2:15 left in the eighth round after Ortiz sustained a large cut over his left eye.

The 18-year-old Banal knocked down Jorge Cardenas in the third round.

Domingo, from Sultan Kudarat, won over Miguel Roman by unanimous decision in the junior featherweight division while Gabi, a native of Davao City clinched the junior bantamweight title over Jose Angel Beranza, also by unanimous decision.

WBO junior featherweight champion Daniel Ponce de Leon prevented a shutout for Mexico when he eliminated previously unbeaten challenger Rey Bautista with 2:30 remaining in the first round.
