FIVE Filipino boxers hurdled their respective opponents to rule the
World Cup Saturday at the Arco Arena in Sacramento, California.
Former WBC super flyweight champion Gerry Peñalosa
capped the Philippines’ successful campaign after dethroning WBO
bantamweight champion Jhonny Gonzalez by knockout in the seventh
round.
Z Gorres, AJ Banal, Michael and Diosdado Gabi
had earlier prevailed to give the Philippines a 4-0 lead.
Z Gorres knocked out former junior flyweight
champion Eric Ortiz in the eighth round to claim the IBF Junior
Bantamweight Intercontinental Title.
The referee stopped the fight with 2:15 left in
the eighth round after Ortiz sustained a large cut over his left
eye.
The 18-year-old Banal knocked down Jorge
Cardenas in the third round.
Domingo, from Sultan Kudarat, won over Miguel
Roman by unanimous decision in the junior featherweight division
while Gabi, a native of Davao City clinched the junior bantamweight
title over Jose Angel Beranza, also by unanimous decision.
WBO junior featherweight champion Daniel Ponce
de Leon prevented a shutout for Mexico when he eliminated previously
unbeaten challenger Rey Bautista with 2:30 remaining in the first
round.
