KUALA LUMPUR: Europe’s No. 1 shuttler Peter Gade of Denmark vowed
to slay some Asian giants at the World Badminton Championships,
declaring himself fit and ready for the premier event starting
Monday.
Gade, a former world No.1 and considered the
only European capable of winning a major, said he was peaking at the
right time for the championships after claiming the Malaysian Open
here earlier this year.
Gade, 31, said he was confident of winning an
expected quarterfinal clash with local hero and tournament No. 2 Lee
Chong Wei, who is gunning to become the first Malaysian to clinch a
title in the 30-year history of the world championships.
“My preparation for the tournament has gone
the way I planned. I wanted to win the Malaysian Open and pace
myself and peak for the world championships. I’ve done that,”
Gade told the New Straits Times.
Gade, a former All England champion, and seeded
five at the championships, takes on unseeded Andrew Smith from
England in the first round.
