Will Ikon win give Vina Morales
a career resurgence?

DESPITE having one of the most beautiful faces in the local music industry, the star of Vina Morales seemed to still be lacking in luster and prominence.  With her recent big win at the first Asean Ikon finals in Malaysia, will her career finally get the much-needed boost it has so long been waiting for?

Double victory for the Philippines:
Vina Morales and Kjwan band
members took top honors in the
Asean Ikon finals in Malaysia

Morales beat Malaysian superstar Jaclyn Victor, the 2004 Malaysian Idol who has won several local and international awards. She opened her act singing the refrain of her hit song “Pangako Sa Yo.” She chose to follow it up with “ Feels So Nice” and was greeted by thunderous applause as she strutted her stuff in a white, body-hugging suit and knee-high boots.

Ikon is a contest for professional singers and bands whose talents deserve wider exposure in the Southeast Asian Region. One of the main requirements is that each artist must perform an original song made for or by them.

The Philippines also took home the top prize in the band category, with Kjwan winning over the favored Malaysia’s OAG and the Indonesian band Tahta. It was Kjwan’s cool brand of original funk metal sound that won them the nod of the judges.

The lineup of judges included Mac Chew (Malaysia), Hedi Koes Enday (Indonesia), Eugene Villaluz (Philippines) and Iskandar Mizra Ismael (Singapore).

Vina’s compelling performance prompted Judika, her male competitor from Indonesia to remark, “I didn’t know what the words of her song meant but I knew it was about love. She (Vina) has this beautiful face and incredible voice. I really want to collaborate with her soon.”

Kjwan lead vocalist Marc Abaya added, “Vina won the hearts of the audience. She was simply amazing.”
