Tourism tops Batanes governor’s agenda

BASCO, Batanes: Tourism may yet be the industry that will give this island-province’s development a big boost.

Gov. Constante Castillejos said the entire province, including the two island-towns of Sabtang and Itbayat, has a lot of ecotourism attractions to offer to every nature-lover.

“Together with some concerned nongovernment organizations [NGOs] as our partners, we will develop and promote especially our natural attractions,” Castillejos said.

He cited the province’s verdant hills and mountains that, he said, are like those of New Zealand, rock formations like those of Colorado, clear waters, clean environment, unique structural designs of buildings and other wonders. He also called the friendly Ivatans an attraction.

The province’s tourism office will be created soon, he added.

The tourism office will take charge of the planning and implementation of tourism programs and projects, he said.

“While the private sector will primarily benefit from the development of the tourism industry, we anticipate the generating of more employment opportunities as well as the enhancement of productivity especially of tourism products and services,” Castillejos said.
