SIDELINE SLANTS
By Rene Saguisag
Focus

I had a piece on Freddie Webb submitted the other day but it seems the fates intervened.

Perhaps he or Bobby Jaworski is to be named permanent PBA Commissioner in the months ahead.

For now, it was not to be for Freddie.

But, one with a Bedan and Letran background like him knows that you either get what you pray for, or something better.

Like I keep saying here, borrowing from St. Loo Cardinals pitcher Joaquin Andujar, the one word that says it all is you-never- know.

Unless perhaps you are talking of incredible Tiger Woods who again dominated in yet another major, the PGA golf championship.

His ability to focus is incredible.

Manny Pacquiao?

In his case, as in politics, it may be that the first denial is the first confirmation.

Romantic flings have derailed careers as we have just seen in the case of Noli Eala, who will, no doubt, make a comeback. He has a lifetime before him.

The shelf life of an athlete is different.

If Manny loses his next fight, it will be two in a row, the first knockout having been delivered by Darlene Custodio.

He may lose the next one to Ara Mina, a knockout who supposedly also charmed JoeMa Sison in the Netherlands and others off their pants.

Kahit Komunista, makalupa rin?

Seriously, be careful, Manny, because as they say, they don’t come back.

One should always have someone whispering to him, “you are mortal, you are mortal,” a reminder to Roman Emperors.

Where are they now?

No one will ever believe that Manny came home just to pray the Rosary with anyone.

Given the stature he has attained, with it comes great responsibility.

He is to be a good role model. If he persists in his immature and irresponsible ways, he will learn that in America, one response is that the corporate sponsors and advertisers go.

Glory and money are fleeting. He may have a lot of money now but in time, it goes.

He was said to have blown close to 200-M in his ill-advised run against Darlene. Money is not an inexhaustible resource.

It would be a sad day if this prince becomes a pauper someday. Someone should knock some sense into his big swollen head. It’s been known to happen. Remember Mike Tyson?

Flash Elorde is the paradigm of many because he was so talented, humble and full of moral stamina. Manny has a lot of physical endurance but in what truly counts, with more of his current shenanigans, he will be just like any other bum.

Meantime, good luck, OIC Sonny Barrios.

I have no idea whether Sonny is related to hookshot Barrios of the Jose Rizal Heavy Bombers in an earlier time. Or to the highly-regarded late magistrate in the Court of Appeals.

OIC means caretaker and Sonny needs all the help he can get lest he become an undertaker. Luckily for him, Noli Eala has shown the way. Both Manny and Sonny should remember that it is best to leave when the audience is still applauding.

Focus, man.
