An integrated regional economy |
|
ECONOMIC ministers of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean)
are set to approve this week a blueprint for an integrated regional
economy. This move is preparatory to the creation of an economic
bloc along the lines of the European Union by 2015.
This ambitious plan comes in the wake of the
multilateral trading regime’s failure to jumpstart talks under the
World Trade Organization (WTO). Trade ministers are scheduled to
meet in Australia next month to try for the nth time to break an
impasse over farm subsidies that has prevented the WTO from further
opening up global trade.
