Priest gunned down in Ilocos

A PARISH priest was shot dead by still unidentified gunmen for still unknown reasons late Tuesday evening in a remote village in Ilocos Norte province, police reports said Wednesday.

Ilocos Region Police Director Chief Supt. Leopoldo Bataoil in a text message identified the victim as Father Florante Rigonan, 48 years old and a resident of Batac town.

The victim was reportedly shot dead by a still unknown number of suspects armed with an M16 rifle at about 10:40 p.m. at Barangay Puritac, Pinili, the reports said.

The reports said the victim had just come out from the house of a certain Florencio Macalma and was on his way to his vehicle when he was attacked, Bataoil said in his reports.

“I have ordered the Provincial Director to form a task force to investigate this. I would also go there to supervise the investigation,” said Bataoil in the text message.

The police official also assured the Catholic Bishop Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) that he and his men would try their best to solve the case as soon as possible.
