BAGUIO CITY: The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and
Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) on Saturday recorded a
temperature of 10.8 degrees Celsius about 5:40 a.m.
Pagasa Baguio weather forecaster Wilson Locando
said this signals the start of a period when temperature can dip to
as low as 6.8 degrees Celsius in this city. This temperature was
recorded in February 1961.
He warned that such a cold spell along the
100-kilometer stretch of Halsema Highway might trigger frostbites
again, damaging farmers’ leafy vegetables if they fail to harvest
these before February.
The usual phenomenon, locally called andap,
develops when a thin icy layer covers fields and trees every night,
making newly-planted crops wilt as the ice melts during daytime.
Due to the prevailing Siberian wind flow,
experts said maximum temperature in the area can reach an average of
19 to 22 degrees Celsius as of press time.
