SIXTEEN students from various schools in the country
qualified for next year’s Philippine Mathematical Olympiad (PMO)
finals.
Dr. Ester B. Ogena, Director of
the Department of Science and Technology-Science Education
Institute, said the PMO finalists showcase the “crème de la crème
of mathematics students in the country”.
“The PMO is just a step for
them to move up further and have a chance to train and be part of
the Philippine contingent to the International Mathematics
Olympiad,” she said.
The 16 students are: Joshua L.
Bacani of Muntinlupa Science High School; Jayon Boe of Legazpi Hope
Christian School; Kevin Christopher Catbagan and Diogo Moitinho de
Almeida of Ateneo de Manila; Earl John Chua of Grace Christian High
School; Ervin Fredrick Dy, Aldric Reyes and Jillian Kristel Sy of
Chiang Kai Shek College; Ephraim Jabneel Eisma of Quezon City
Science High School; Edmund M. Galvadora of University of Saint

Oliveros and Jomo-Vitto Simbul of Philippine Science High School;

College Foundation.
Now on its 10th year, the PMO is
the oldest and most prestigious nationwide mathematics competition
among secondary-school students. Finalists were screened through a
written competition conducted nationwide.
The winners of the PMO will have
the chance to compete in the 2008 International Mathematical
Olympiad (IMO) which will be held in Spain. The representatives of
the country to the IMO will undergo intensive mathematics training
during the summer of 2008.
