Martinez bares changes in womens’ coaching staff

By Ruben D. Manahan 4th, Reporter

The Philippine Football Federation will start 2008 by making some changes in the national team’s management committee, president Mari Martinez announced Friday.

Martinez said he will put Joel Villarino, Dolfo Alicante and Merly Acibar in the women’s national team’s coaching staff. They will replace Marlon Maro, Freddie Estacion, and Elmer Caida.

“It’s not that they are not efficient in the respective positions right now. It’s just that they have other tasks to do in the football community,” Martinez explained.

Martinez said Maro, Estacion and Caido might handle either the grassroots development program or the men’s team.

Maro has been with the women’s national team for more than eight years while Estacion and Caido have been serving the PFF for more than two years.

Villarino is a Class B women’s team instructor. She’s currently a trainer of Poveda College and St. Paul. Alicante, a Class C instructor, handles youth programs while Acibar has played for the national team for more than seven years.

However, Martinez also said that Villarino, Alicante and Acibar will be “under observation” if they are fit in their respective positions until the Asian Football Confederation Women’s Cup, which will be held from March 1 to 9.

Meanwhile, Martinez said that the country may host the AFC Women’s Cup.  “I’m now talking to all the necessary personnel in PFF if we are ready to hold it here.”

Martinez must submit the bidding letter to AFC on Decmber 28.

“I’m not sure if we can do this with just a short notice, but we are doing the best we can,” he said.

The PFF is eyeing to hold the AFC games in Manila, Bacolod and Iloilo.
