UE’s Gumana rules MCF chess tourney

 
Final Standings: Malik Gumama 6.5 points; Jose Camaya, MJ Turqueza, Glenn Caballero, Rolando Tenorio 6.0 points; Naim Labe, Cherry Ann Mejia 5.5 points.

FORMER University of the East standout Malik Gumama had a draw with youthful MJ Turqueza to rule the 10th Alay Kay Mayor Marides Carlos Fernando (MCF) Active Chess Tournament Saturday night at the Marikina Sports Complex in Marikina City.

Gumama tallied 6.5 points after seven rounds to earn the champion’s purse worth P4,000 in this event which attracted 86 players and organized by Marikina Chess Federation (MCF) head Johnny “Joel” Gaudia in cooperation with NM Rudy Ibañez.

Turqueza finished with six points in a tie with Jose Camaya, Glenn Caballero and Rolando Tenorio. Each got P1,625.

Winners in other categories were Rolando Tenorio, Roel Sto. Domingo, Nelson Mendoza and Ferdinand Paet (Top Marikina players), Nor Kusain and Danilo Azucena (Top Seniors), MJ Turqueza (Top Junior), Cherry Ann Mejia (Top Lady) and Giovanni Mejia (Top Kiddy).

Meanwhile, the Marikina City Age Group Invitational Chess Championships started Sunday in the same venue.

Marikina City Mayor Marides Carlos Fernando and Asia’s First Grandmaster Eugene Torre made the ceremonial moves during the opening ceremony.
