Assassination, destabilization

The assassination of Benazir Bhutto in one of Pakistan’s most gardenlike city, Rawalpindi, which happens to be where Pakistan’s equivalent of the CIA and the military intelligence service are based, plunges South Asia into a new period of anxiety.  It will surely make the movers of world politics view Pakistan with alarm.

This outrageous murder is not a run-of-the-mill assassination, for which South Asia has been notorious these past decades.  Other assassinations deprived countries—and perhaps the world—of brilliant and exceptional personalities and national leaders.  Pakistan’s former prime minister Benazir Bhutto was not holding a national office. She was only trying to recover her position of leadership in Pakistan and was even willing as desired by the United States  to arrive at an accommodation with the military-backed strongman, President Pervez Musharaf.
