HIGH ON E(TIQUETTE)
By Patty Betita
Hair talk for men

EVER since the word metrosexual popped up in beauty magazines, men indeed have become more conscious about their appearance. I’ve noticed that on so many points. In their choice of wardrobe for instance, men are now more open and experimental in terms of style, cut, color, print and pattern. How many guys have you seen in baby pink shirts? Don’t they look so clean, handsome, and mabango tingnan as we say in Filipino? Pink is definitely cool and sexy on a guy.

Notice too how men’s salons are now gaining a huge popularity and following. Yes, men love getting prepped up and pampered too. In fact, gone are the days that you only see men in the barbershop or barbero. They are more discriminating and sophisticated with their cuts and want to be updated with their ’dos.

Here then are some tips for all the men out there who want to get the head of hair that suits them best.

Find a good stylist. Ask around and find out which salon or stylist your friends go to. If you see a salon you want to try, call them up and ask if they specialize in a certain type of haircut or hairstyle. Would they consider themselves modern or classic? Edgy or conservative?

Don’t be shy. You may want to drop by a salon and ask if they give free consultation before making an appointment. Find out also what particular hairstyle they are good at and if this works for you. Also check if they only specialize in women’s hairstyles. Do this before they start whacking at your hair!

What’s your fuss factor? Let your stylist know how much time you spend on your hair. Do you prefer using a blow dryer or just finger drying? What kind of styling aids are you used to using? These are important things for your stylist to know. Some men bring their own styling aid if they’re not comfortable with the brands a particular salon uses.

Tell your stylist about your lifestyle. Do you work in a conservative environment? Are you a man about town and fashion-forward? Ultimately, your stylist needs to know how comfortable you are with a particular hairstyle, so you better make sure you’re both on the same page when you get down to details.

Ask your stylist to teach you how to style your hair. Don’t you hate it when you like your hairstyle but when you go home and do it on your own, you can’t seem to get it right? The solution is to learn from the expert. Do they use the hairdryer in a particular way? Ask your stylist if there a particular technique you should follow.

Bring a picture, a tear sheet, a cut out. Stylists confirm that more and more male clients are bringing in photos from magazines to show them the specific cut they want. With photos, your stylist will be able to assess how suitable the cut is for your face-shape and your lifestyle. They can also suggest alternatives if it’s not the right cut for you.

The money talk. Tip appropriately! A proper tip is 15 to 20 percent of the haircut price for your stylist and a little less for the person who washes your hair.

Always remember that the right hairstyle can give you much confidence and satisfaction. Finding the right hairstyle for you may take a little effort though, but the results are worth it in the end.

As with any good relationship, the key to getting a great haircut is really proper communication between you and your hairstylist. So before the haircut, you should have a consultation with your stylist to discuss your hair and lifestyle.
