A Muslim in the Senate

ALL talks about “unity government” and a “unity ticket” for the Senate race exclude a significant segment of the population—the 7 million Muslims who have spread throughout the country from their traditional homeland in Mindanao and Sulu.

The political kingmakers and dealmakers are panting for the “winnable” candidates—movie stars, scions of powerful families, the very rich and newsmakers with a huge name recall. There is no talk about the principle of inclusion or about making a Senate slate truly representative of the country. This keeps the Moros and the indigenous peoples out of the picture.
