The Department of Education is planning to tap the
help of the Philippine Association of Law Schools to provide legal
service to teachers in the May elections.
“I spoke with Fr. Joaquin
Bernas and Dean Cesar Villanueva of the Ateneo Law School to look
into the possibility of tapping the Philippine Association of Law
Schools to extend additional legal assistance for our teachers
during the elections,” said Education Secretary Jesli Lapus
He said this would give legal
protection to teachers who may be harassed or charged with
administrative or criminal case during the election.
The Alliance of Concerned
Teachers met with Lapus to discuss legal and security issues for the
election.
ACT Chairperson Antonio Tinio
said the Commission on Elections and the DepEd should comply with
Section 166 of the Omnibus Election Code mandating that members of
the board of election inspectors should be registered voters in the
city or municipality.
Lapus assured the teachers that
he would pursue these concerns with the Comelec on their behalf.
He called for a meeting of top
DepEd officials on Tuesday to firm up the operation of the DepEd
Halalan Task Force for the May polls.
