Two policemen on routine patrol
were killed in an ambush Sunday just east of the Philippine capital
Manila, police said.
The officers
were killed instantly in the attack in the town of Taytay, and the
gunmen fled toward a Muslim-dominated area, police said.
It was not
clear who attacked the policemen.
Police said
they were not discounting the possibility that the killings were a
revenge attack by militants sympathetic towards the separatist Moro
Islamic Liberation Front (MILF).
One suspected
MILF member was killed and two others captured in a predawn raid on
February 1 near Taytay.
The raid was
launched after cops said former members of the MILF’s “special
operations group” were hiding in the area.
The MILF,
which is engaged in peace talks with Manila, has denied it has
members operating in the city. Before the peace talks, the group had
waged a rebellion for an independent Islamic state in southern
Mindanao since 1978.
