Manila is playing host to
legendary husband-and-wife jazz artists Airto Moreira and Flora
Purim who will perform at the Coconut Palace on February 23 at the
culmination of the ongoing Irind Annual Jazz and Arts Festival.
The couple is
noted for reinventing the sound of their native Brazil. Moreira is
one of the world’s leading percussionists today, while Purim has a
distinctive style that matches the vigor of modern jazz. She is one
of very few known singers who can utilize her voice as an
instrument, and not just through the lyrics and melody of a song.
Purim’s style has added much energy to the cool hesitation of
Brazilian jazz.
The
Starbucks-sponsored jazz festival kicked off on February 15 at the
Glorietta Activity Center in Makati City, and has gone on to bring
the diverse world of jazz to eight malls, free for the general
public. The weekend saw Irind at Serendra on February 16, the Power
Plant on February 17, and the Alabang Town Center on February 18.
The remaining
show dates are as follows with the corresponding venues: The Podium
today; Market! Market! on February 20; the Eastwood City on February
21; and Greenbelt on February 22. The festival’s finale on
February 24, features Grammy winner Diane Schuur’s outdoor concert
at the Sofitel Philippine Plaza. Each concert showcases foreign
artists alongside local Filipino talent.
Tickets for
the February 23 and 24 concerts are available at select Starbucks
Coffee outlets in the participating malls. For inquiries, call
890-2016 or 0917-8907003, or visit www.pijazzfest.com for a complete
