Bush bounces back |
|
A DAY after being dealt a sound
beating by the US House of Representatives, the Bush administration
won a significant victory in the Senate where a bid to force debate
on the planned US troop buildup in Iraq failed to pass. Had the
debate been approved, it would have given the US Congress a stronger
hand in forcing President George W. Bush to rethink his strategy to
send more American soldiers to Iraq instead of bringing home those
who are already there.
As it is, Bush
has managed to bounce back somewhat after being on the ropes for
quite a spell. The defeat of the debate initiative in the Senate has
bought him the time to gather new momentum for his flagging plan to
win the war in Iraq. The strategy calls for the insertion of 21,500
fresh troops to restore order in Iraq while the Iraqi government
builds up its own forces. Once the Iraqis could fend for themselves,
the US would gradually pull out its troops.
