SEVEN members of the Smart/Petron
Philippine tae kwon do team are training rigorously in Tehran, Iran
after vying for the first time in the 2007 Asian Club Championships
and the 19th FAJR Championships.
The Filipinos,
who are staying in Iran until Feb. 25, are Athens Olympian and Doha
Asian Games silver medalist Tshomlee Go, Sydney and Athens Olympian
Donald David Geisler 3rd, Doha Asiad bronze medalist Manuel Rivero
Jr., Jeffrey Figueroa, Ernesto Juan Mendoza 3rd, Alexander Briones
and Michael Alejandrino.
Supervising
the team’s training are delegation head Stephen Fernandez, team
manager Chang Woo Lee and coach Roberto Cruz.
Philippine Tae
Kwon Do Association president Robert Aventajado said the
participation in the Asian Club and FAJR events and training form
part of the team’s preparation for the upcoming Thailand Southeast
Asian Games, London Olympic qualifying tournament at the World
Championships in China.
The Filipinos
saw action against the best from 29 other Asian countries including
Korea, Chinese Taipei, China and Iran.
The Iran
exposure, the first for the Smart/Petron squad this year, is
expected to boost the Filipinos’ confidence and further sharpen
their skills.
The trip is
supported by Smart Communications, PLDT, Petron and the Philippine
Sports Commission.
