SEVEN members of the Smart/Petron Philippine tae kwon do team are training rigorously in Tehran, Iran after vying for the first time in the 2007 Asian Club Championships and the 19th FAJR Championships.

The Filipinos, who are staying in Iran until Feb. 25, are Athens Olympian and Doha Asian Games silver medalist Tshomlee Go, Sydney and Athens Olympian Donald David Geisler 3rd, Doha Asiad bronze medalist Manuel Rivero Jr., Jeffrey Figueroa, Ernesto Juan Mendoza 3rd, Alexander Briones and Michael Alejandrino.

Supervising the team’s training are delegation head Stephen Fernandez, team manager Chang Woo Lee and coach Roberto Cruz.

Philippine Tae Kwon Do Association president Robert Aventajado said the participation in the Asian Club and FAJR events and training form part of the team’s preparation for the upcoming Thailand Southeast Asian Games, London Olympic qualifying tournament at the World Championships in China.

The Filipinos saw action against the best from 29 other Asian countries including Korea, Chinese Taipei, China and Iran.

The Iran exposure, the first for the Smart/Petron squad this year, is expected to boost the Filipinos’ confidence and further sharpen their skills.

The trip is supported by Smart Communications, PLDT, Petron and the Philippine Sports Commission.
