People’s champ Manny Pacquiao
is now a high-school graduate after passing the Accreditation and
Equivalency Test of the Department of Education.
Education Secretary Jesli Lapus
said Pacquiao took the national test on February 4 at the Ireneo
Santiago National High School in his hometown of General Santos City
together with his brother, Bobby. Both dropped out of high school
because of extreme poverty.
The good news was announced as
the DepEd designated Pacquiao as the ambassador for the Alternative
Learning and People’s Champ for Education, citing his courage and
determination in continuing to pursue his education as worth
emulating.
“He serves as an inspiration to
the youth, especially those who were unable to push through with
their studies due to difficult and unfortunate situations,” Lapus
said.
DepEd’s Bureau of Alternative
Learning System conducts the A&E for individuals who have
dropped out of formal schooling but who wish to complete their
elementary and high- school education.
Passers are given a certificate
equivalent to a grade 6 or fourth-year high-school diploma in the
formal school system. This year, about 50,000 individuals took the
A&E test in various areas nationwide.
