The Metro Manila
Development Authority said on Friday that it would not be
intimidated by the killing of one of its workers during a sidewalk
clearing in Baclaran, Parañaque City.
“If
these people think that an attack on our men can force us to abandon
our duties, then they are mistaken,” MMDA general manager Robert
Na-cianceno said.
“Although
we don’t want to endanger the lives of our personnel, our job is
to put order on our streets and sidewalks and in doing so we have
also affected the operation of some syndicates protecting these
illegal vendors,” Nacianceno said.
On
Wednesday night Eddie Mellejor, a 47-year-old MMDA security aide,
was shot and killed by an unidentified man as he kept a lookout for
illegal vendors at the corner of Bayanihan Street and Roxas
Boulevard.
Mallejor
was the eighth MMDA worker killed since the agency started its
sidewalk clearing in Metro Manila.
