Arroyo inaugurates irrigation project

SCIENCE CITY OF MUŅOZ, Nueva Ecija: President Arroyo led irrigation and agriculture officials in opening the gate valve of the completed irrigation canal in Barangay Magtanggol on Tuesday.

Branding the city as the center of agricultural science of North Luzon agribusiness, being host to various agricultural research centers and learning institutions, the Chief Executive stressed that the power generation component of the project, built under the so-called build-operate and transfer scheme, is already being reaped.

The completed canal will feed irrigation water to at least 10,000 hectares of new areas in Muņoz and the town of Guimba and Talugtog, she said.

With the President were Agriculture Secretary Arthur Yap, National Irrigation Administration chief Arturo Lomibao, presidential adviser for North Luzon Renato Diaz, Gov. Tomas N. Joson 3rd, Second District Rep. Eleuterio Violago and NIA-CMIPP Officials, engineers Serafin Palteng and Alexander Coloma.

Coloma said another irrigation canal under construction would irrigate over 16,000 hectares in Guimba up to Victoria in Tarlac province.

Arroyo noted that besides irrigation, the 600-km dike roads would make Nueva Ecija retain its role as premier rice producer in the country.
