News agency cites Vatican
alert on missing Catholic priest

ROME: A Catholic Filipino missionary is feared kidnapped in the Philippines after he went missing five days ago, a news agency close to the Vatican said here on Friday.

Lucio Bola, 46, “went out to go and bless a house . . . and has not come back since,” the Rome-based Asianews agency cited a witness as saying. Police and religious authorities have launched a search, it added.

Asianews said two Christian missionaries have already been abducted and killed by Abu Sayyaf, an Islamic group active in the southern Philippines where the vast, 80-percent Catholic archipelago’s Muslim minority is concentrated.

Bola disappeared after leaving his family home in the province of Misamis on the southern island of Mindanao. He had just come home for a break from his mission on the island of Cebu in the center of the Philippines.
