Only 12,418 Filipino World War II veterans in the Philippines, out of over 200,000 who fought for America, remain alive and waiting to receive disability pension and other benefits that passage and enactment of the Filipino Veterans’ Equity Bill (H.R. 4574 and S. 146) will give them.
Both the Office of Veterans’ Affairs of the Philippine Embassy in Washington and all the Filipino veterans organizations in the United States, formed into the American Coalition for Filipino Veterans, Inc., have been campaigning for the Equity Bill.
Sixteen years ago the Immigration Act of 1990 allowed some Filipino World War II veterans to be eligible for United States citizenship. From November 1990 through February 1995, approximately 24,000 veterans applied for naturalization under the new law. However, it did not provide veterans’ benefits to these new American citizens.
Filipino veterans need your help to push for the passage by both houses of the US Congress and the enactment by President Bush of the Filipino Veterans’ Equity Bill (S. 146 and H.R. 4574).
