THE Armed Forces is flush with pride over the string of successes it has scored in its campaign to crush the Abu Sayyaf. Just last week government troops killed Abu So­laiman, who had masterminded the Abu Sayyaf’s biggest and bloodiest raids, including the kidnapping of tourists in Dos Palmas and the bombing of the SuperFerry 14 off Bataan. And over the weekend, the military chief, General Hermogenes Esperon, confirmed that the body that had been dug up from a shallow grave in Jolo in December is that of Abu Sayyaf chieftain Khadaffy Janjalani.

Solaiman and Janjalani were among the last of the dreaded group’s most-wanted leaders; the US had offered million-dollar bounties for them. They were also the most elusive, having avoided capture for almost seven years.
