US soldiers killed in latest attacks in Iraq

IRAQ: Five US soldiers were killed and three wounded in a firefight with militiamen in the southern shrine city of Karbala, where the 10-day Shiite mourning period of Ashura began Sunday.

The US military said the clash erupted Saturday at a local center where Iraqi security forces, officials and coalition forces were meeting to discuss security measures for the Ashura ceremony.

BAGHDAD: A bomb blast in a bus killed five people and wounded 15 in Baghdad on Sunday as the US military announced the arrival of about 3,200 new troops to secure the violent city, security officials said. The bus explosion took place in central Baghdad’s Kharmana Square. Another car bomb exploded near Beirut Square in east Baghdad, killing one person and wounding five civilians, the official said. --AFP
