MILF commander survives ambush

By Anthony Vargas, Reporter

A MORO Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) sub-commander survived an ambush attempt late Thursday afternoon in the restive southern part of Mindanao, Eid Kabalu, the MILF spokesman, said.

Kabalu said Adan Abdullah of the MILF’s 106th Base command was injured after being ambushed in Sultan Kudarat town in Sharrif Kabunsuan province.

Abdullah was aboard a pick-up truck traveling along the highway when motorcycle-riding gunman fired at him about 4:10 p.m., the MILF spokesman said.

Kabalu said that Abdullah sustained gunshot wounds on the chest and on the hand and was quickly rushed by his companions to a nearby hospital for treatment.

“Base on reports he [Abdullah] is in stable condition and as for the motive for the shooting . . . we still don’t know yet,” Kabalu said.

The ambush incident took place as the government and the MILF plan to restart formal peace talks that bogged late last year when both sides failed to come to terms on the issue of “ancestral domain.”

The secessionist rebels want to get 1,000 barangays in Central Mindanao but the government is only amenable to giving them less than 700 barangays.
