LETTER

Govt officials ignore the law

About “Iloilo raid turns into blockbuster spectacle” (Wednesday January 24) and other reports about the police action to carry out the suspension of Gov. Niel Tupas:

Secretary Ronaldo Puno and Ombudsman Merciditas Gutierrez should be the first to uphold the law but they chose to ignore it. The reason must be political.

Only courts can suspend local elected officials. The Ombudsman does not have such power. Both Mr. Puno and Madam Gutierrez should go back to law school.

I am a lawyer.

I like your editorial cartoons. They must sting the targets. But I can’t decipher your cartoonist’s name.

Wage hike will cause inflation

It was right for President Arroyo to be against the House of Representatives’ P125 across-the-board wage hike bill. It will be a disaster for the economy indeed. (“Palace kills all hopes for wage hike” Thursday January 25).

We own a small bakery and can barely meet the expenses. We will be forced to close down. What is worse is that with extra money for everyone the price of ordinary goods will go up because there will be less producers of goods like us when we close down.

Thanks your columnists who have written on the folly of that bill.
