Back to the Agot we know and love

WE knew her then. We know her now. Agot Isidro is lovelier the second time around.

Ever since she discovered the relaxing beat of bossa nova music, Agot has been enjoying a renaissance in her musical career. Her album The Island—a compilation of pop classics reworked and given a bossa flavor—has helped reintroduced her to a whole new generation of music lovers.

Now, Agot is out to conquer the concert stage once more in a concert billed Back to Basics on February 7 and 8 at the Music Museum. She will be joined by the country’s premier vocal group The CompanY, upcoming singer Robbie Navarro, formerly of the all-male group The Wiseguys and Holiday Records’ Neo Soul R&B artist and a special surprise guest.

Expect Isidro to reprise hits from The Island, including her carrier single, “I Wish That I Was Making Love (To You Tonight),” a bossa-flavored cover by the seventies’ pop duo the Alessi Brothers.

And since the show is entitled Back to Basics, there will be a portion in the show where Agot will reprise some of the pop songs she made famous, including “Everyday,” “Beginning Today” and “Sa Isip Ko.” She will also be doing her own version of several popular standards that she grew up with, a Sergio Mendes suite, a medley of songs that has names as the title, among others. It will be a night for Agot and her audience to reminisce everything that’s good about music.

Back to Basics will have Victor Oria as musical director. Set design is by Rico Ancheta, makeup by Fanny Serrano and costumes by Ito Curata.

Agot says she is eager and excited to be back on the concert stage and to, as the title of her show puts it, go “back to basics.”

Explains Agot: “It’s called Back to Basics because I’ll be going back to what I’ve always loved, which is singing.”

Agot says that after taking a brief break from show biz to try and start a family with husband Manu Sandejas, she decided to go back to her singing career. “Instead of moping because what we wanted to happen [have a family] didn’t happen, I decided to go back to my first love, which is singing and performing. Music has always been a big part of my life, and I’m excited to go back to it again.”

Recently, Agot staged a concert at the Captain’s Bar of the Mandarin Oriental Hotel. Attended by her longtime fans, bossa lovers and some of her closest friends in the industry, the show was a big success, but left everyone wanting more—so on February 7 and 8 at 8 p.m., Agot Isidro returns to the stage for Back to Basics.
