Congressman Biazon won’t run for Senate

By Jonathan M. Hicap, Reporter

REP. Ruffy Biazon of Muntinlupa City on Tuesday turned down the offer of the Liberal Party for him to run as senator and instead will seek reelection as congressman.

“I would like to complete my three terms as representative of the lone district of Muntinlupa City in order to fulfill my commitment to serve them for a full three terms,” Biazon said.

He was not present at the 61st anniversary celebration of the Liberal Party on Monday where the party announced his nomination as a senatorial candidate along with Sen. Francis Pangilinan, Reps. Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino of Tarlac, Nereus Acosta of Bukidnon and Erin Tañada of Quezon, and former congressman Florencio Abad.

“I am humbled by the nomination by one of the oldest, established, dignified and principled parties in the Philippines, considering that there are other qualified and more deserving members of the party who may be supported by the party,” Biazon said.

Biazon said he still has many projects that need a third term for him to finish.

“When I first assumed office in 2001, I had committed to represent Muntinlupa City in the House of Representatives and implement projects and programs in the district. These commitments include legislative measures that will benefit the city and projects that will serve the people. Although many of these commitments have been fulfilled, some still require a third term to complete,” he said.

Biazon praised the LP for “its long political history and record of standing firm in its principles and platform of government.”

He also said that he declined the nomination so he and his father Rufino Biazon would not be accused of starting a political dynasty.

“We do not want to add to the discussion about the Senate being a family affair,” he said.

He said he and his father would be able to effectively push for common legislative agenda when they are in separate chambers in Congress.
