BAGUIO CITY: Baguio’s mercury level has dropped to
10.6 degrees Celsius early Monday morning sending people to wear
thick clothes.
The recorded cold temperature was
relatively higher than the 10.2 degrees Celsius, which was recorded
on January 8, 2003, based on the records of the Philippine
Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Service Administration
based here.
Weather observer Efren Dalipog
said in an interview that the mercury level in higher elevations
near Baguio like Mount Cabuyao is lower than two degrees, which
means that the temperature in the mountain overlooking the city
early Monday morning was pegged at 8.6 degrees Celsius.
Dalipog said two weather
systems—the frontal system affecting Luzon and the moderate to
string northeasterly surface wind flow affecting Luzon and Visayas—are
causing more chilly days in this mountain resort city.
The lowest temperature recorded
this month was also a much-awaited moment for thousands of South
Koreans, who missed the winter season in their country since they
came here to study.
Long-time Baguio residents expect
more chilly days this month or until next month, as records of
PAGASA show over the past decades.
The city normally recorded a drop
in the mercury level in the months of January and February or even
extending to March. The lowest temperature recorded in modern-day
Baguio was 6.3 degrees Celsius on January 18, 1961.
In March 1986 the city’s
temperature was recorded at its lowest of 9.1 degrees Celsius; at
9.3 degrees in March 1972 and even lower at 7.4 in March 1963. The
highest temperature recorded was 30.4 degrees Celsius on March 15,
1988.
The cold weather has made coffee
shops profitable these days, although an owner of a garment store
said residents as well as tourist have been buying thick clothing
since December.
