The motorcycle Diaries
By Brian Afuang

Let’s ride

Right off the bat let’s be clear about one thing: This column (which marks its first appearance today and will come out on this space monthly) is titled “The Motorcycle Diaries” not because I harbor any illusion of being compared to Ernesto “Che” Guevara. I’m aware I possess neither rugged Hispanic looks nor the intellect, ken and compassion that equipped (cursed?) Guevara to become one of the most influential revolutionaries in history—although it’s safe to say I bathe and shave more regularly than he did. Of course, it also goes without saying that the only thing I share in common with Gael Garcia Bernal—the Mexican actor who played Guevara in the namesake movie based on Guevara’s and friend Alberto Granado’s journal on their life-changing journey titled The Motorcycle Diaries—is that arms and legs sprout out from our torsos and we both could ride a motorbike convincingly enough.

Especially that “for some strange reason” bit.

You could be driving cars all your life, but unless you have gone out on the streets for a good amount of time in a motorcycle, you’d never really have any idea why bikers behave—or more precisely, misbehave—the way they do.

I know, I know, into each life some rain must fall. What I don’t understand is why it should—without warning—do so in the middle of what could possibly be the most scorching summer the Philippines has known, on the day BMW Phils. has scheduled a bike ride to Subic, and pour so freaking hard, damn it.

I ENTERED the gates of the Misano Racetrack on a Ducati 1098—on the biggest day of World Ducati Week 2007, at that. There, I know I have your undivided attention. Now keep reading.
