The

Let’s ride
|
|
Right off the bat let’s be clear about one thing: This column
(which marks its first appearance today and will come out on this
space monthly) is titled “The Motorcycle Diaries” not because I
harbor any illusion of being compared to Ernesto “Che” Guevara.
I’m aware I possess neither rugged Hispanic looks nor the
intellect, ken and compassion that equipped (cursed?) Guevara to
become one of the most influential revolutionaries in
history—although it’s safe to say I bathe and shave more
regularly than he did. Of course, it also goes without saying that
the only thing I share in common with Gael Garcia Bernal—the
Mexican actor who played Guevara in the namesake movie based on
Guevara’s and friend Alberto Granado’s journal on their
life-changing journey titled The Motorcycle Diaries—is that arms
and legs sprout out from our torsos and we both could ride a
motorbike convincingly enough.

Being first, being
Smart
|
|
Now this is something that doesn’t happen very often—on second
thought, make that never. You’d have to be dreaming or stoned, if
not both, to even think that, say the Ferrari distributor in the
Philippines, would get first dibs at introducing a new model from
the hallowed Scuderia to the local market. That’s before any of
the Ferrari distributors or country offices in the planet get to do
so.

Road safety for motorcyclists and drivers
|
|
Follow traffic rules and wear a helmet. How difficult is that? Cut
down to its barest essentials, riding safety for motorcyclists calls
for one to do exactly the aforementioned rules, and in a perfect
world everything would be all right.

Respecting riders
|
|
In an interview published in this month’s issue of Top Gear
Philippines, LTO chief Reynaldo Berroya—an ardent,
dyed-in-the-wool biker—laments the fact that for some strange
reason, motorcyclists in the Philippines are not respected on the
road, an observation I completely, wholeheartedly share with him.
Especially that “for some strange reason” bit.

Understanding biker
issues
|
|
Let me tell you this; only a biker could
understand what bikers’ issues are. You could be driving cars all
your life, but unless you have gone out on the streets for a good
amount of time in a motorcycle, you’d never really have any idea
why bikers behave—or more precisely, misbehave—the way they
do.

All-weather friend
|
|
I know, I know, into each life some rain must fall. What I don’t
understand is why it should—without warning—do so in the middle
of what could possibly be the most scorching summer the Philippines
has known, on the day BMW Phils. has scheduled a bike ride to Subic,
and pour so freaking hard, damn it.

I ENTERED the gates of the Misano Racetrack on a Ducati 1098—on
the biggest day of World Ducati Week 2007, at that. There, I know I
have your undivided attention. Now keep reading.
