Ugly is beautiful

By Amiel martin Cabanlig

The latest craze that has everyone on their feet is CROCS—the ultra comfortable and colorful footwear that originates from Boulder, Colorado. Known for its unusual look, fashionistas around the world now swear by Crocs’s one-of-a-kind style and comfort. For them, ugly is definitely beautiful!

The amazing material that Crocs is known for is called “Croslite,” a cell resin exclusive to Crocs has not only molded to people’s feet but has also captured the hearts of Manila’s walking public. It seems that this craze is here to stay as the brand launches various models with attractive and fun colors and fashionable styles for all age groups.

Recently, Crocs International held their regional sales conference here in Manila because of the wide and inspiring popularity of Crocs in the Philippines. Among the top executives who arrived was John McCarvell, senior vice president of Global Markets, and The Manila Times was able to talk about the Crocs trend that is sweeping the nation.

AMC: Crocs is such a huge phenomenon here in the Philippines, how do you feel about its success?

JMC: We are very pleased at how the Filipinos are responding to our brand. Like other markets all over the world, there is always an appreciation for comfortable and fashionable footwear. The success we believe begins when a pair of feet and Crocs meet. People of all ages get attracted to the different models and colors but when they actually try them on and use them, they fall in love.

AMC: That’s true. I can vouch for that! Crocs started with the clogs called Beach but now, I’ve noticed that they are so many different models of Crocs around and all are very different from the other. Are all these still equally recommended by orthopedics?

JMC: Yes, we are constantly innovating and coming out with new designs for men, women and kids. We have also ventured into combining other materials that are equally comfortable with croslite. Of course, the footbed will still always be Croslite, since this is the most comfortable and is Crocs’ signature feature. All of our shoes are recommended by doctors. It is really surprising how many people are on a tireless lookout for stylish footwear that are actually beneficial to the feet.

MT: What are those little accessories you’re wearing on your Crocs? I’m beginning to see them in a lot of Crocs. . . .

JMC: Jibbitz! These are little designs made of croslite that are inserted in the holes of your Crocs. Crocs lovers love accessorizing and personalizing their Crocs. We have over 700 designs to choose from. Designs range from flowers, animals, horoscopes, basketball teams, Disney characters, school teams, hobbies and numbers/letters. Many parents even find the jibbitz as a useful tool to teach their children about colors, shapes and animals. It’s really creating waves in the global market.
