ABOVE ALL THINGS
By Ramon Jr. & Eloisa S. Mabutas
She wants to wiretap
her hubby’s calls

Query: Two years ago, I married a man whom I believed would make an ideal husband. Our marriage, however, elicited opposition from my parents, because my future lifetime partner was jobless. Thus, after our marriage, we resided at a squatters’ area and I worked as a laundry woman for our survival. Initially, we had no major problems until I became pregnant which forced me to stop working.

Fortunately, my husband was able to get a job as a bus conductor. In a short while, however, his lifestyle character started to show—he oftentimes failed to come home. I found out and verified that he was having relations with another woman. That started my agony. Having observed that he frequently made telephone calls at a neighbor’s place, I planned to tap the same for the purpose of verifying the information I got. However, I got scared of legal consequences. Subsequently, I got an information that wiretapping is already allowed. Is it correct?

Having come across your authoritative column in The Manila Times extending legal assistance/guidance to desperate people, I am asking you if the information I got is true. Is wiretapping already allowed?

The information you got is wrong. If your information refers to Republic Act 9372, otherwise known as the “Human Security Act of 2007,” they obviously misunderstood the same. Said law refers to acts of terrorism punishable under six articles of the Revised Penal Code and six special penal laws all of which were mentioned in this corner last Wednesday. As we see it, the purpose of your intended wiretapping is not related to terrorism. Moreover, the allowed wiretapping under said legislation requires an order from the Court of Appeals.

We wish to congratulate our daughter, Grace, and her husband, Nong, for the divine blessing showered on your family on the occasion of Lourdes’ baptism. We had intended to be personally present on the significant event, but delayed issuance of visa requirements aborted our plan. Nonetheless, we were spiritually with you and the gifts of the Holy Spirit in us were similarly renewed, thereby spurring us to pray for your family’s good health, unity and prosperity.

By her baptism, Lourdes became the property of the Blessed Trinity. The Holy Spirit infused into her soul sanctifying grace and thereby made her His temple, in which He dwells. Through this grace, which is called a new birth, the soul becomes so precious, holy and beautiful, and pleasant, that the Holy Spirit and together with Him the other two Divine Persons (God the Father and God the Son) delight in making their abode in such a sanctified and “deified’ soul and make it their special dwelling place or consecrated temple.

Such dwelling of the Blessed Trinity in our soul is the most precious that can be bestowed upon us, because the three Divine Persons gave Themselves to us. It is the beginning of the Beatific Vision which is the ultimate end of our life and which consists in possessing God and seeing Him face to face.

Finally, we are wishing Therese a happy fifth and Joshua advance third birthday. May they have more years to come!

Above all things, let us reflect on the following statement of our Lord and master Jesus Christ: “Everything is possible to one who has faith.” (Mark 9:23).
