A BlackBerry with the right curves

Globe introduces Curve to local market

Globe Telecom has done it again! Only a few months after launching the beautiful BlackBerry 8200, or simply called Pearl, Globe is once again first in launching another great-looking BlackBerry, the Curve.

The BlackBerry Curve is the smallest and lightest full QWERTY BlackBerry handset, featuring a smooth and friendly design. The device will also deliver the world renowned BlackBerry e-mail and messaging experience and other premium phone features such as the intuitive trackball navigation system, fast Web browsing and powerful multimedia capabilities that include a 2 megapixel digital camera.

“We’re witnessing a pace where there’s now an even wider choice of [BlackBerry] phone models,” said Jesus Romero, head of the enterprise business group (EBG) at Globe, in an intimate media gathering in Makati. “This is an indication that they [RIM] are well attuned with what the consumers need,” he added.

Founded in 1984, RIM or Research In Motion is the Canadian company who design, manufacture and market all BlackBerry products including the innovative wireless solutions (e.g. push e-mail) for the mobile communications market with global subscribers reaching over 10 million.

“Globe has always been in the forefront of innovation and the new Blackberry Curve with its power and simplicity, is an innovative and attractive mobile solution for our corporate clients,” said Romero.

The new Curve has a small and light design with smooth curvy edges highlighted with chrome and liquid silver finish. Measuring 107mm x 60mm x 15.5mm, the Curve is smaller than the wider 8800 model (the enterprise model that came right after the Pearl) and weighs a mere 111grams.

The Curve also has a new and powerful media manager application included with the BlackBerry Desktop Manager Software.

The Roxio Media Manager introduces a new level of simplicity that allows user to easily search for media files on their computer, view and organize the files, create MP3 music from CDs, adding audio tags and create playlists, copy or convert pictures, music and video for playback on the Curve.

A built-in 2.0 megapixel camera with 5x digital zoom and flash can capture images up to three picture quality and size resolutions that can be quickly shared via e-mail, MMS, BlackBerry Messenger and Bluetooth. While a microSD expandable memory slot for up to 4GB takes care of additional phone memory.

“[The Curve] is an ideal balance and mix of both business and lifestyle,” said Norm Lo, RIM vice-president for Asia-Pacific. “ It combines an impressive array of features that are important to mobile professionals and we are very pleased to be working with Globe to bring this well-balanced handset to the Philippine market,” Lo added.

The new BlackBerry Curve is available to corporate clients of Globe through EBG starting this August at P21,100 and will come free at plan P2,000. The package will include support for instant messaging with BlackBerry Messenger, Google Talk and Yahoo Messenger. Its Internet support allows access to up to 10 supported personal and corporate email accounts, including the most popular ISP e-mail accounts. While the BlackBerry Enterprise Server supports enterprise deployments within  IBM Lotus Domino, Microsoft Exchange and Novell GroupWise environments.

“We are experiencing accelerating growth, particularity in the international market such as Europe and Asia-Pacific, as people realize the value of our products and services,” said Lo. “We’re not simply a sexy handset, we are a solution.”
