Smoking cessation:

Personalized strategies to kick the habit

WHEN I was reviewing for the medical boards, a professor gave us some trivia on smoking. Though controversial, he said there are some disease entities where smoking cigarettes can seem beneficial to. Most notably, some studies have found that patients with Alzheimer’s (AHLZ-high-merz) Disease are more likely not to have smoked tobacco products than the general population. This hints that smoking offers some protective effect against Alzheimer’s. Being the most common type of dementia, Alzheimer’s is a progressive brain disorder that gradually destroys a person’s memory and ability to learn, reason, make judgments, communicate and carry out daily activities.
