Pro-administration legislators on
Monday slammed the plan of two anti-Arroyo generals to back the bid
of detained Sen. Antonio Trillanes IV to reinvestigate the “Hello
Garci” scandal and the extra-judicial killings issue. The
lawmakers sounded alarm over the move of the officers to use the
senator in reviving the ouster campaign against President Arroyo.
Clearly, the two nameless
generals, Reps. Antonio Cuenco of Cebu and Eladio Jala of Bohol
suspected were members of the partisan cabal that backed former
President Estrada, the late Fernando Poe Jr. and the opposition in
attempts to unseat President Arroyo.
On the contrary, militant Rep.
Rafael Mariano of Anakpawis “the coming out of the two generals
showed that cracks within the military establishment still remain
and appears widening.”
“Malacañang should take the
media interview made by the generals as a strong political
action,” Mariano said, adding “it’s both a warning and a sign
of protest against the corrupt and fascist Arroyo regime.”
Cuenco expressed doubt if the two
generals would be true to their word in providing Trillanes with
ammunition on the “Hello Garci” scandal and the extrajudicial
killings.
“If indeed they have credible
‘ammo’, then we dare them to come out now and stop talking like
the source of a blind item in the entertainment news. After all,
their ilk already had the opportunity to spill the beans before the
House during its ‘Hello Garci’ investigation and two impeachment
hearings.”
As far as Cuenco is concerned,
the anonymous generals would only be taking advantage of the
opposition’s control of the Senate. “They’re now positioning
to have a role in the Senate probe to gain media mileage at the
administration’s expense.”
Jala, for his part, viewed the
revival of the “Hello Garci” tape probe as a waste of time, as
the Lower House had thoroughly probed the issue back in 2004.
“Now we will be hearing the
same allegations that had already been discounted before. The coming
out of these two generals to help Sonny Trillanes is just another
twist in their anti-administration script,” said Jala.
Jala said the officers and
Trillanes intend to use the Senate inquiry for purposes of
propaganda.
