DPWH official gunned down in highway

TALAVERA, Nueva Ecija: A ranking official of the Department of Public Works and Highways in charge of projects for the first and second congressional districts of Nueva Ecija was gunned down in a broad daylight attack along the national highway in Barangay San Miguel Na Munti on Tuesday.

Senior Supt. Alfredo Cabalees, acting director of the provincial police, identified the victim as engineer Pacifico C. Berin, 64, chief of the First Nueva Ecija Engineering District and a resident of Piñahan, Quezon City.

Investigation showed Berin had joined his subordinates at Lucy’s Ihaw-Ihaw for engineer Resituto Candelaria birthday celebration. He was on his way back to office when an unidentified gunman repeatedly fired at him about 11:45 a.m.

He fell face down and died instantly from five gunshot wounds, two of them in the head and three in the neck, said police investigators.

The suspect fled toward Cabanatuan City on a motorcycle parked a few meters away, according to witnesses.

Police Officer 3 Anastacio de la Cruz, who headed the scene of the crime operatives, said they recovered six spent shells from a .45-caliber pistol.

Norma M. del Rosario, 1NEED administrative officer, said she couldn’t recall Berin encountering any problem during his stint as district engineer. “He was kind and supportive,” she stressed.
