HI! SOCIETY
By Becky Garcia
Imelda and Dewi

WHAT kind of conversation can you expect when two powerful former first ladies meet? Highly interesting, yes, but certainly no longer controversial. In fact, Madame Imelda Marcos and Mrs. Dewi Sukarno were simply comparing notes about their late husbands. This we saw up close at the formal sit down dinner hosted by the gracious and charming hostess Virginia Lane, who was herself radiant in her green Filipiniana terno.

Bejeweled that evening, both former first ladies were still beautiful despite the passing of time, and together, they were a picture of restrained elegance.

All the other guests were so mesmerized and listened to all their tales of power, their travels and the important people that they have encountered. It was so interesting to listen to their stories. Quite overwhelming was how the two share very similar experiences. And we were all intently listening and asking questions which they graciously answered, oftentimes without batting even an eyelash.

At one point Dewi said she is very grateful to her late husband who gave her everything and who taught her a lot of priceless lessons, which made her a complete woman. After the dinner, Mrs. Marcos showed the guests her jewelry collection, which Madame Sukarno happily tried on, much to everyone’s delight. Mrs. Marcos also paraded in her orange terno like a true, ageless model in a gala fashion show.

The evening ended with Mrs. Marcos giving the guests a bag each full of her jewelry collections. We were like children giggling and enjoying the loot bags that we got. A truly unforgettable evening. And to our gracious hostess Virgie—looking forward to more exciting dinners like this.
