DEFENDING champion San Sebastian
broke the heart of University of Perpetual Help, 106-67, on
Monday at the start of the National Collegiate Athletic Association
juniors basketball tournament at The Arena in San Juan.
Ryan Buenafe scored a game-high
36 points on top of nine rebounds and had 8 assists and seven steals
while Arvie Bringas finished with 23 points, 7 rebounds and a block
to propel the Staglets’ hot start in the six-team high- school
division competition.
“We’ve played almost all the
strong teams in the country and I can say they [Buenafe and Bringas]
are the best high school players today. They played very well
today,” said San Sebastian coach Raymond Valenzona, who steered
Staglets to a back-to-back championship last year.
In the first game, the St.
Benilde Baby Blazers, represented by the De La Salle-Greenhills,
broke away in the fourth quarter en route to a stunning 81-64 win
over the Letran Squires.
Marco Yulo finished with 20
points while Martin Reyes and Christian Joseph de la Paz contributed
14 and 13 points respectively for the Blazers to share the lead with
the Staglets.
Meanwhile, University of
Perpetual Help System Dalta athletic director Michael del Mundo said
that they will abide by the decision of the NCAA management
committee regarding the disqualification of 6-foot-9 Indonesian
Isman Thoyib.
