Govt radio announcer in Tawi-Tawi shot dead

By Anthony Vargas, Reporter

AN announcer of a government radio station was killed by a lone gunman in a village in Tawi-Tawi Monday, police said.

His two companions were wounded in the attack that took place in Barangay Nalil, Bongao town, reports reaching Camp Crame said.

Chief Supt. Joel Goltiao, police director of the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao, identified the fatality as Vicente Sumalpong, an announcer of Radyo ng Bayan.

Goltiao said Sumalpong was shot several times. His companions, Dima Antam and a certain Joel, were also hit.

The three were riding a motorcycle on their way to work when they were fired at.

The police chief said the motive had not been determined, but noted that Sumalpong was not what would be considered a hard-hitting announcer.

Another police official said one of the angles being eyed by investigators is internal problems in the radio station where Sumalpong was working.
