THE Department of Energy (DOE) and state-owned
Philippine National Oil Co. (PNOC) have signed an agreement that
would electrify 50 barangays and 100 communal facilities in the
provinces of Zamboanga del Sur in Western Mindanao, Sultan Kudarat
in Southern Mindanao, Maguindanao in the Autonomous Region in Muslim
Mindanao and Antique in Western Visayas.
The project would cost P50.4
million and would be funded through the DOE’s Barangay
Electrification Project Fund and 2006 Grants-In-Aid.
Under the agreement, each of the
50 barangays will have two communal facilities and 40 household
beneficiaries.
The PNOC project is a joint
effort between the governments of the Philippines and the
Netherlands that began in 2002. To date, the project has enabled the
electrification of 12,390 barangays across the country.
The energy department said that
the project, which will be implemented immediately, also includes
one barangay each in the provinces of Kalinga, Negros Oriental and
Cebu.
