Instead of waiting for fire alarms, Mayor Jejomar C.
Binay has directed the Makati Fire Department (MFD) to continue
conducting house-to-house inspections in the city’s 33 barangays.
In a verbal order to Fire Chief
Insp. Jose S. Embang Jr., city fire marshal, Binay directed all fire
inspectors to prioritize low-income areas particularly MACDA
Compound in Cembo, Laperal Compound in Guadalupe Viejo, the stretch
of Davila in La Paz and alleys in Barangay Singkamas, where houses
are built close together.
Binay said through these
inspections, the MFD would be able to identify fire-prone areas.
“We should prioritize these
areas in our inspections. The structures in these places pose a very
high risk to the people and the community,” Binay said.
He also ordered barangay
officials and employees of the Department of Engineering and Public
Works (DEPW) to assist the firemen in the inspection, so they can
encourage residents to remove or fix fire hazards in their
households.
The firemen will take charge of
looking for hazardous materials, while employees of the DEPW will
check electrical installations of residential and business
establishments.
The MFD for its part will divide
its 10 substations into clusters to focus on their areas of
responsibility.
Embang said they would
immediately dispatch fire inspectors to the areas identified by
Binay, and will put all substations and the fire central station on
full alert.
