Ilocos Norte rules IRAA meet

By Liway M. Yparraguirre , Northern Luzon Bureau

SAN CARLOS CITY, Pangasinan: Ilocos Norte dominated the elementary and secondary divisions to retain the overall championship at the close of the Ilocos Region Athletic Association Meet here Friday.

City Mayor Julian Resuello, Vice-Mayor Ayoy Resuello, DepEd Assistant Region 1 Director Josefina Tamondong and San Carlos City Schools Division head Rowena Banzon presented the trophies to all the winners during the awarding ceremony held at the Central II Elementary School multipurpose dome.

In the elementary division, Ilocos Norte earned 274.5 points, followed by Pangasinan 1 with 176.5 points and Pangasinan 2 who had 167 points.

In the secondary level, Ilocos Norte recorded 390 points. Far second was Pangasinan 2 with 107.5 points, followed by La Union with 169 points.

The Laoag City delegates were adjudged as the “Most Disciplined Delegation” while Dagupan City was chosen as the “Cleanest Delegation.”

“Mahirap mag-maintain, pero maganda ang pakiramdam. This year we made it real good,” said Ilocos Norte Schools Division Superintendent Dr. Araceli Pastor after Ilocos Norte won its eighth straight overall title.

Besides the big celebration awaiting the delegates back home in Ilocos Norte, Pastor said all the medalists will receive incentives from the provincial government.

“A very good future awaits our star athletes. There are people already scouting for them and that has been done practically several years now to our star players. Some are graduating now in La Salle, UST, FEU,” she disclosed.

Meanwhile, Tamondong commended the city government and the San Carlos City Schools Division for their successful hosting of the IRAA. She also thanked the private sector, including the private schools here, for extending assistance during the tournament.

The Central II Dome where the gymnastics event was held, and the Olympic-size swimming pool located at the back of the Central I Elementary School were donated by a private citizen named Marcelo Casillan Jr.

“The hosting of San Carlos was great. Thank you to those with good hearts who made these facilities possible. The schools have been ready so the participants were comfortable during their stay. They have nothing else to ask for,” said Tamondong, who also announced that next year’s IRAA might be held in Ilocos Sur.
