One night only: Virtuoso Strings

By Rome Jorge

One hundred and twenty string musicians, three philharmonic orchestras, ballerinas and danseurs as well as a soprano and pianist all on stage. Vivaldi played by a sea of rondallas. From Bach to Beatles to Copeland’s “Hoe Down.” Violinist Coke Bolipata, cellist Renato Lucas, French classical guitarist Thibault Cauvin and German violinist Angelo Bard. All this for one night only. There are literally more than a hundred reasons why you can’t afford to miss Virtuoso Strings at the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) on March 9 at 8 p.m.

Virtuoso Strings is the follow up to last year’s Virtuosos, A Wealth of Piano Masters, also made possible by BNP Paribas, France’s leading bank and staunch supporter of the arts with the support of Alliance Fracaise de Manille, the Johann Strauss Society and Peninsula Manila. Just as with last year’s concert, the event is for the benefit of the CCP that truly deserves and needs our support not only for maintaining its facilities for its resident companies such as the Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra, Ballet Philippines, Tanghalang Pilipino, Ramon Obusan Folkloric Group and many others but also for its effective outreach activities such as developing community orchestras and art therapy for children traumatized by conflict under its Arts for thee People Program. Generosity will be rewarded with music on March 9. As CCP President Nestor Jardin notes, “Music enables.” Feel the hands of a multitude of geniuses pluck strum and stroke your heartstrings as you give life to the CCP with your participation.

Featured artists include the Metro Community String Orchestra, The University of Santo Tomas Guitar Ensemble, Guitar Quartet and String Orchestra, Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra, Cainta Los Trobadores Rondalla, pianist Mary Anne Espina, soprano Rachelle Grodias and Ballet Philippines. Chino Toledo serves as conductor and musical director, Chris Millado as stage director, Alden Lugnasin as choreographer, Dennis Marasigan as lighting director and Ricardo Cruz as set designer.

The repertoire is rich, varied and intriguing, with songs that range span the entire breadth of musical history around the world: the Catalan “Songs of the Birds,” Willy Cruz’s “Sana’y Maghintay ang Walang Hanggan,” Bartok’s “Romanian Folk Songs,” Bellantini’s “Baiao de Gude,” Manore’s “Danza Paraguaya,” Bach’s “Concerto in D Minor for Two Violins and Strings” Barber’s “Adagio for Strings,” Vivaldi’s “Spring from Four Seasons [Allegro],” Villa-Lobos’s Aria from “Bachania Brasileiras,” Domenconi’s “Koyunbaba [suit for guitar],” Tedesco’s “Concerto for Guitar and Orchestra No. 1 in D Major [Allegretto],” Buencamino’s “Pizzicato Caprice,” Copeland’s “Hoe Down” and a Beatles medley arranged by Josefino Toledo.

Tickets are priced P3,000, P2,500, P1,000 and P500.
